Simple Steps to Follow While Checking your Provident Fund Online

Provident Fund is a government saving/investment option which involves a fixed contribution to be made by an employee from his/her salary and this is then matched by the employer. Hence, the 2 contributions by both parties are put in a fund which accumulates over a period of time to become a corpus.

In a digital age, it is obvious that even finances can easily be monitored online. The Employee Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) governs the EPF scheme and allows you to check your PF online in the following ways:

1] EPF balance check via Umang App

EPFO subscribers can now check their PF balance on their mobile phones using Umang App. This app was launched by the Government of India (GoI) to provide EPFO members an access to various government schemes and services at one platform. Here, a user can view EPF Passbook, raise and track EPF claims. To avail this benefit, an EPFO member needs to do one time registration after downloading the Umang App in one’s mobile phone.

2] PF balance check via EPFO portal

An EPFO subscriber can check one’s PF balance by logging in at the EPFO portal — epfindia.gov.in/site_en/index.php. After logging in, they need to follow the below mentioned step by step guide:

a] Login at EPFO portal — epfindia.gov.in/site_en/index.php;

b] Go to ‘Our Services’, scrawl and click on ‘For Employees’;

c] Go to ‘Member Passbook’ under ‘Services’;

d] You will be redirected to new web page

It should be noted that an EPFO member can access one’s EPF passbook if its UAN is being activated by its employer. In fact, UAN is given by the EPFO, but it’s activated after verification by the employer.

3] EPF balance check via SMS

An EPFO member can check one’s PF balance by sending SMS to 7738299899. The SMS text format would be — EPFOHO UAN ENG. Last three digits in the SMS are the first three digits of the preferred language. This SMS service is available in 9 other languages — Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Bengali. However, the SMS has to be send from the mobile number which is registered with the UAN.

4] PF balance check through missed call

An EPFO member can check one’s PF balance by using EPFO missed call service. What an EPFO subscriber need is to give a missed call on 011-22901406 from its UAN registered mobile number. EPFO will immediately send your PF details on your registered mobile number.

On withdrawal, the PF money can be used to make a Fixed Deposit of 6 months. This is a general practice to get better returns by re-investing PF money into FDs. However, it is better to go for Corporate FDs in recent times. And longer time periods like those of minimum 1 year have always been better.

The reason being higher interest rates which can be understood as follows:

  • THE AVERAGE FD RATE IN INDIA IS a maximum of 5.5%.
  • As of July 2021, the average fixed deposit interest rates offered for tenures ranging from 7 days to 10 years, for deposits below Rs. 2 crores of major financial institutions, like YES Bank, is 6%.
  • Among the reputed bank fixed deposits, the average rate of return range is from 4.5-5.75%.
  • Post Office FDs offer more lucrative rates than banks but they don’t exceed 6%.
  • FDs for shorter time periods like less than 6 months have rates calculated on a Simple Interest basis taking into account the number of days.
  • A Corporate FD does a lot better than all of these. Bajaj Finance Fixed Deposit (FD) is a great example, for the same, because it provides a general rate of 6.50% subject to further raises with certain specific conditions.

Besides Bajaj FD also has the following benefits:

  • Special offers to Senior Citizens
  • High Credibility and Stability
  • Flexible Time Frames
  • Smaller Minimum Deposit
  • Digitized Application Process
  • Online Loan against FD
  • Auto-renewal

Hence, this is how you can not only check but make better use of your Provident Fund amount online.
